NABARD SPONSORED SCENTED-RICE PROJECT
wo scented-rice projects were started in five blocks of Ranchi district in June 2016 by Divyayan Krishi
Vigyan Kendra, with finanacial support from NABARD, Ranchi. Duration of the project is 3 years
Tand the total numbers of beneficiaries involved are 100. The Project areas are Mandar, Bero, Chanho,
Silli and Namkum. The main objective of the Project is to conserve indigenous varieties of rice, which are
genetic building material of future hybrids and high yielding varieties, and to develop proper marketing
channel, which will increase income of the farmers and also improve their socio-economic condition.
The second year (i.e. 2017-18) of the Scented Rice Project has been completed successfully. During this
year three-day training programme was conducted at Divyayan KVK on SRI method of organic paddy
cultivation from 18th to 20th September 2017. Organic input like liquid manure, bio pesticide, trichoderma,
bio fertilizer etc were distributed among all the beneficiaries. There after farmers have produced 109
qtls of quality seed of two selected potential varieties like Bhutku and Tulsi Mukul under this project. To
provide market of scented rice Divyayan KVK has purchased paddy as seed from farmers and the KVK
also trying to establish link between farmers and marketing channel like Big Basket and Nature Cart for
securing of sustainability in production and sale of scented rice. As a result the area under scented rice
cultivation has now increased apart from the initial project areas.
For promotion and wide publicity of the indigenous scented rice, a separate programme was organised on
28th June 2019. It was attended by around 100 participants including the staff members of the Divyayan
KVK. The chief guest of the programme was Mr. Ramesh Gholap, Director Agriculture, Govt. of Jharkhand,
and Dr. Anjani Singh, Director, ICAT-ATARI, Patna,
Sri Jay Nigam, DGM, NABARD, Ranchi; and others were distinguished guests. Swami Bhaveshananda,
Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Morabadi, Ranchi presided over the programme.
All the guests lauded the efforts of the KVK for promoting organic farming in the Ranchi and its adjoining
districts and the steps being taken to tie the farmers with the market so that they would get good return
and feel encouraged to continue the practice.
